Getting a US Driver's License
Each state runs its own licensing, but the flow is similar everywhere: written knowledge test → learner's permit → road test → license. Many states offer the written test in multiple languages.
Check your state's rules
On your state DMV's website, check: whether your foreign license can be converted directly, which languages the written test offers, and whether appointments are required.
⏱ 10 minutes
Gather identity documents
Typically: passport + visa/green card, I-94, SSN (or an SSN ineligibility letter), and two proofs of address (bank statement, lease, utility bill). Lists vary slightly by state — check the official list before you go; one missing document means a wasted trip.
Study for the written test
The written test covers traffic rules and road signs, all from the state handbook. Drill practice tests until you pass mock exams consistently — passing on the first try saves a rebooking.

Book and take the written test
Most states offer online booking (some accept walk-ins, but lines are long). Pass and you get your Learner's Permit on the spot.
💲 $30–90 (incl. license, varies by state)
Practice driving on your permit
With a permit you must have a licensed adult in the passenger seat. Practice the road-test specifics — parallel parking, three-point turns, head checks when changing lanes. Some states require holding the permit for a set period before the road test.
Arrange a car and insurance for the road test
You must bring your own vehicle with valid insurance and registration. Borrowing a friend's car? Confirm the insurance covers other drivers. Or pay a driving school to use their car — it usually includes a pre-test lesson and is worth it.

Take the road test
An examiner scores you from the passenger seat. Big mistakes: rolling stops at stop signs, not head-checking blind spots on lane changes, speeding. Fail isn't fatal — most states let you rebook within days.
Get your license; consider REAL ID
You'll get a temporary paper license first; the card arrives in 2–4 weeks. Choose the REAL ID version while you're at it (one or two extra documents) so you can board domestic flights without a passport.
